CO2CRC Otway Project

Pipeline

The pipeline was installed between December 2007 and January 2008. It is 2.25km long, stainless steel and 50mm in diameter. The maximum design temperature and pressure are respectively 50oC and 15MPa.

Pipeline location

During construction, a trench of 2.5 m deep was dug using an excavator for most parts. Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) was used along the track between the Buttress‐1 site and Callaghans Road because of the water‐saturated soil and under the cased crossing at Callaghans Road. The trench was backfilled immediately after laying the pipeline and the pipeline pathway rehabilitated.

The pipeline was externally coated and installed with a sacrificial anode cathodic protection system which was tested.

The construction of the pipeline was treated as a gathering line under the Victoria Petroleum Act and an exemption from the Pipeline Act was granted.
